Hyson Green Youth Club: Empowering the Youth and Strengthening Community

In the heart of Radford, amidst a community full of diverse cultures, the Hyson Green Youth Club stands as a ray of optimism for young people facing challenges in their lives who need support and guidance.

Elliott Campbell the janitor of the youth club

One remarkable story within this youth club is that of Elliott Campbell, a 35-year-old janitor at the club who was once a 10-year-old member of the club himself, 25 years ago.

Reflecting on his journey, Elliott highlights the importance of the community centre, stating, "I needed that support and sense of community to ground me.

"It was a good place to come, we had a place to socialise off the streets. In a way, the community centre saved me."

Elliott's life took an unfortunate turn, leading him to be imprisoned for 5 years at the age of 26 for ABH.

However, committed to turning his life around upon release, he found himself back at the very community centre that played an important role in his upbringing.

Now, as a janitor, he shares, "I get a sense of belonging helping the community, and I feel like I've been given another chance."

The support offered by the youth club has allowed him to reshape his life, earning him a Black Achievement Award for the most transformed, presented by Police Commissioner Caroline Henry.

Elliot's commitment extends beyond his role as a janitor, he organises multicultural events, African gatherings, and vibrant parties, reflecting the rich diversity of the Radford community.

Notably, he leads a "Skate for Change" roller-skating project, promoting physical fitness and mental well-being.

He emphasises the project's goal of "engaging families and the community through the joy of skating."

Mark Wright the event organiser of the club

Mark Wright, an event organiser for the club, emphasises the club's role in supporting  young people through regular events and initiative.

"We meet a lot of troubled young people and try to support them as much as we can.”

The centre strives to bridge gaps and offer free opportunities for families to engage in arts and crafts, and socialising during school breaks giving young people something to do.

Despite the challenges posed by funding cuts in youth services across the country, the Hyson Green Youth Club stands strong.

According to a report by the YMCA, youth clubs across England have faced severe cuts since 2010.

However, Hyson Green Youth Club goes against all odds and continues to make a positive impact on the community.

Mark highlights the importance of maintaining youth clubs, stressing that "with options decreasing, our youth risk being left without proper guidance."

In a world where 43% of young people deem youth clubs as important to their well-being, and 1 in 4 express the desire for increased extra-curricular opportunities, the Hyson Green Youth Club stands tall, providing a lifeline for those in need like that of Mr Campbell.
